Another Austin-area police force interested in body cameras

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office wants to provide the cameras to 44 deputies, but that cost remains a concern. The paper reports that the Sheriff's office has already tested one Body Camera system, and is currently testing Prima Facie Cameras by Safety Vision. Each police agency in Bastrop County — including the Bastrop, Smithville and Elgin police departments, in addition to the sheriff’s office — has either already employed the use of body cameras or is in the process of acquiring them. “I personally like them because it gives the officer a sense that everyone knows what’s being done, so there’s nothing that’s going to be hidden,” said Smithville Police Department Sgt. Greg Stewart, noting that the department first began using body cameras roughly two years ago. “Because of the ongoing issues with society and officer and public safety, it has definitely been a plus for the department.”
